• The Cultural Content of Genetic Essentialism: How “Black Genes” and “White Genes” Shape Multiracial Perception in the United States

    揭示普通人对“种族基因”的信念比例,提示临床中隐含的本质主义假设。

Polygenist ideas historically represented racial groups as having separate biological origins. The present research examines beliefs in specific race-linked genes (i.e., genes associated with racial groups), such as “Black genes” and “White genes,” as a content-bearing form of genetic racial essentialism (i.e., the belief that race reflects inherited genetic differences). Across two online surveys of U.S. adults (Studies 1a–1b; N = 440; predominantly White samples), approximately 41% of participants endorsed the existence of both “Black genes” and “White genes.” Participants also consistently characterized “Black genes” as more dominant than “White genes” and “White genes” as weaker than “Black genes.” In Study 2, an experiment with U.S. adults ( N = 320), Black–White multiracial targets described as having greater Black ancestry were perceived as possessing a higher proportion of “Black genes.” These estimates were associated with a greater likelihood of categorizing targets as Black. Dehumanization judgments showed a different pattern: The association between inferred genetic composition and dehumanization varied according to participants’ endorsement of “dominant Black genes,” becoming less differentiated as endorsement increased. Together, the findings identify race-linked gene beliefs as culturally recognizable but contested representations through which some individuals interpret racial ancestry and multiracial targets in the United States.

  • Can Phenomenology Be Liberatory? Phenomenology IS Liberatory! Motherhood, Mental Health, and Research Praxis

    研究者自述方法转向,说明现象学如何同时成为研究与解放的实践。

The paper is a culmination of three researchers working together to develop a research project studying maternal mental health. This project was initially intended to entail descriptive phenomenological methods to explore the role of community and context in the experience of mental health among new mothers, particularly those with reduced access to formal mental health resources. As the researchers developed their ideas, theoretical and methodological discussions revealed challenges inherent in a project in which the description of a phenomenon might entail changing it. In this paper, we draw on classical and contemporary phenomenology (including critical phenomenology) and place this work in dialogue with the tradition of liberation psychology. We consider whether the nature of lived experience is such that to commit to detailed understanding of any phenomenon is to address how it is created and how it may change. We suggest that addressing the experience with rigorous, contextually sensitive phenomenological methods, such as photovoice, leads to a phenomenology that is not just critical, but liberatory. We discuss the parallels between phenomenology and liberation psychology and consider the ways that insights from liberation psychology might help to expand the reach and impact of phenomenology.

  • Psychological Functioning and Parent–Child Mental Health Interrelations in Pediatric Gastrointestinal Autoimmune Disorders

    比较三类儿童胃肠道自身免疫病,把亲子心理健康纳入临床评估视野。

Purpose To examine psychological functioning and parent–child mental health in pediatric gastrointestinal autoimmune disorders. Child anxiety, depression, alexithymia, negative automatic thoughts and health-related quality of life were compared across inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease and hepatopathy. Parental psychological functioning and parent–child associations were also assessed. Methods This cross-sectional study included 59 children aged 8–17 years with confirmed IBD, celiac disease or hepatopathy and one parent per child, recruited from a university pediatric gastroenterology department in Greece during 2024. Participants completed validated psychological questionnaires. Associations, paired parent–child comparisons and diagnostic-group differences were examined. Results Greater child alexithymia and more frequent negative automatic thoughts were associated with higher symptoms across all RCADS outcomes, whereas health-related quality of life was inversely associated with all outcomes. Parental alexithymia was associated with child-reported obsessive-compulsive symptoms, while six associations of parental depression, anxiety and alexithymia with parent-rated child outcomes remained significant. Parents rated child symptoms higher than children in all paired RCADS comparisons. Diagnostic comparisons suggested the greatest psychological burden and lowest health-related quality of life among children with Crohn’s disease. Conclusions Alexithymia and parent–child mental health emerged as important dimensions of psychological functioning in pediatric gastrointestinal and hepatological autoimmune disorders. Findings support multi-informant, family-centered psychological assessment within pediatric gastroenterology, while acknowledging shared-informant variance and the cross-sectional design.

  • Reinterpretation of Logotherapy’s Dimensional Ontology via Embodied Phenomenology

    以身体体验重读弗兰克尔,为意义疗法提供可操作的现象学路径。

This article examines foundational tenets of logotherapy and proposes an embodiment-focused reinterpretation of Frankl’s dimensional ontology. We begin by contrasting negative orientations to suffering via the existential vacuum with positive orientations to transformation grounded in three expressions of the noetic: discovery of meaning, self-detachment, and self-transcendence. Next, we examine the philosophical basis for an embodied logotherapy via a reinterpretation of meaning discovery as well as a reinterpretation of soma, resulting in somatic reinterpretations of the noetic expressions of discovery of meaning, self-detachment, and self-transcendence. Finally, clinical applications with transcriptions are used to illustrate how somatic-experiential methods can be more intentionally integrated into clinical practices while ensuring logotherapy remains true to its philosophical commitments.

  • Introducing a New Dimension of Individual Differences in Existential Psychology: Development and Initial Validation of the Existential Reflection Scale

    填补存在主义个体差异测量的空白,新增“存在反思”这一维度。

Measuring individual differences in existential psychology has traditionally been centred around two key themes: (a) the ways in which individuals seek or attain meaning and purpose in life and (b) the extent of their anxiety related to existence and mortality. We introduce a new dimension of individual differences within existentialism: the extent to which individuals are curious about and enjoy reflecting on their own existence. This is a dimension of individual differences that has not been addressed effectively so far, and we discuss the importance of this trait within different social contexts. The new 11-item Existential Reflection Scale underwent a preliminary validation in seven British samples ( n = 836). The scale showed high internal reliability ( ω = .808) and concurrent validity with existing scales, including measures of meaning and purpose in life. We discuss the ways in which the scale can be of value for predicting cognitive and behavioural tendencies, such as in situations where the concept of mortality is made salient, or when individuals process information of an existential nature.

  • Exploring Positive Identity in Autistic Adolescents: A Feasibility and Acceptability Study of a Co-designed Group Intervention

    由自闭症青少年共同设计的团体干预,为积极身份认同提供可行性证据。

Background Cultivating a positive identity may buffer against the adverse mental health outcomes often experienced by autistic individuals. Group settings can provide valuable spaces for identity consolidation. This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of a co-designed group intervention promoting positive identity and self-esteem among autistic adolescents. Methods A six-week group intervention was co-developed with eight autistic adolescents. Sixteen autistic adolescents (13–16 years; 10 females, 5 males, 1 non-binary) and their caregivers participated. Psychometric measures were collected pre- and post-intervention to assess self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale), wellbeing (Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale), and autistic identity (Multidimensional Social Identification Scale). Feasibility was assessed through recruitment, retention, attendance, and data completeness; acceptability was evaluated via session ratings and post-group interviews analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Results The intervention showed high feasibility (6.25% attrition) and acceptability, with positive feedback on content and facilitation. Themes highlighted the importance of shared experience, social connection, and adaptive delivery. Conclusions This novel co-designed intervention was feasible and acceptable for autistic adolescents and caregivers, supporting identity-affirming, post-diagnostic approaches within clinical services.

  • Sites of Insight: Blackness, Psychology, and Methods of Liberation

    把黑人美学视为打破主流认识论的力量,拓展解放心理学的理论边界。

This essay explores what Black aesthetics might engender for Black people, centering the mutuality between Black living and aesthetic production as a liberatory praxis. Drawing from liberation psychology, I engage Blackness not as an object of analysis but as a force that unsettles dominant epistemological and psychological frameworks, opening pathways for theorizing differently in the discipline of psychology. Rather than limiting Black aesthetics to modes of representation or reaction, I examine their affective and resonant dimensions, attuned to the texture, shape, and emotional force of Black creative expression. Through a Black aesthetic analysis of Elizabeth Catlett’s public sculpture Students Aspire , I illuminate how its visual and affective elements enact a breach of the order of Western psychology as rooted in anti-Blackness. The sculpture becomes a site of assembly and relationality, animating possibilities for Black worldmaking. I conclude with a discussion on how Black aesthetics are generative sites of psychological insight and liberative potential.

  • Attitudes Toward Traditional Chinese Reproductive Norms and Fear of Childbirth Among Female Undergraduate Students in Mainland China

    连接传统生育规范与分娩恐惧,关注高学历年轻女性的生育心理。

Traditional Chinese reproductive norms, which emphasize the continuation of family lineage and often perpetuate traditional gender roles, have historically been the dominant influences on reproductive behavior in China. However, during the past few decades, a significant number of young people—particularly highly educated young women—have begun to challenge these normative controls. Concurrently, fear of childbirth (FOC) has become increasingly prevalent within Chinese communities. This study aims to investigate the relationship between attitudes toward traditional Chinese norms and FOC in highly educated young Chinese women. Data were collected via a cross-sectional online survey of unmarried women undergraduate students in mainland China ( N = 1,076) who did not have children. FOC and attitudes toward traditional Chinese reproductive norms were assessed using self-report questionnaires. The study found that over one-third of female undergraduate students experienced intense FOC. In comparison with students who accepted the traditional reproductive norms, those who rejected them reported significantly heightened levels of FOC. These findings indicated that in the current social context where traditional norms persist yet are resisted by some young Chinese women, the resulting social pressure may lead to FOC among them. Future longitudinal research is needed to verify the association of resistance to reproductive norms with elevated FOC and clarify the underlying mechanisms.

  • Re-membering Country and Culture: Relational Liberatory Praxis in an Aboriginal Women’s Healing Project

    呈现原住民主导、去殖民取向的疗愈项目如何落地并支持女性康复。

Blak Women’s Healing is an Indigenous-led program developed by, for, and with Aboriginal women in the west of Melbourne. Grounded in liberation psychology, decolonial community psychology, and Indigenous studies, the program engages contemporary cultural practice and yarning to create culturally safe spaces where Aboriginal women can come together to explore, understand, and support healing. This article reports on one iteration of the program, drawing on women’s stories of participating in the cultural practice workshops and the subsequent public exhibition, where further yarns took place. Using a relational and culturally grounded analytic approach consistent with the program’s liberatory praxis, we examined how women narrated their experiences across these interconnected spaces. Through this work, we observed the enduring impacts of historical trauma and ongoing structural violence, alongside the strength, cultural knowledge, and collective resilience mobilized by Aboriginal women to (re)build pathways to healing for themselves, their families, and communities. The findings illuminate how cultural re-membering, relational connection and collective safety, and the amplification of counter-stories operate as forms of liberatory praxis. In doing so, the article contributes to scholarship on Indigenous-led healing and demonstrates the transformative potential of culturally grounded, community-based approaches to supporting social and emotional wellbeing and healing.

  • When Cultural Borrowing Offends: Divergent Effects of Multiculturalist and Polyculturalist Ideologies

    区分两种多元文化意识形态,解释文化借鉴评价分歧的心理机制。

Diversity ideologies guide people’s responses to and evaluations of intercultural behaviors. We investigate how diversity ideologies affect how observers respond to cases of cultural borrowing, whether they are evaluated as appropriate or appropriative. We contrast the classical multiculturalist view with the emerging polyculturalist view. Both depart from colorblindness in endorsing cultural expression and recognition, but they differ in assumptions about purity and preservation. Multiculturalists, concerned with preservation of traditions, are more likely to feel uncomfortable with cultural mixing, leading to negative evaluations of the act of cultural borrowing. In contrast, polyculturalists, who assume that traditions constantly interact and evolve, are less likely to have purity concerns that color their evaluation of borrowing. Across correlational (Studies 1 and 2) and experimental studies (Studies 3a and 3b), multiculturalism predicts negative judgments of cultural borrowing, whereas polyculturalism predicts milder judgments. These divergent reactions are mediated by feelings of disgust. Thus, two diversity ideologies that both value cultural differences lead to opposing reactions given their differential assumptions about whether cultures should remain distinct and intact. These findings suggest potential moral implications of polyculturalism in the evaluation of cultural borrowing.
