Sites of Insight: Blackness, Psychology, and Methods of Liberation

This essay explores what Black aesthetics might engender for Black people, centering the mutuality between Black living and aesthetic production as a liberatory praxis. Drawing from liberation psychology, I engage Blackness not as an object of analysis but as a force that unsettles dominant epistemological and psychological frameworks, opening pathways for theorizing differently in the discipline of psychology. Rather than limiting Black aesthetics to modes of representation or reaction, I examine their affective and resonant dimensions, attuned to the texture, shape, and emotional force of Black creative expression. Through a Black aesthetic analysis of Elizabeth Catlett’s public sculpture Students Aspire , I illuminate how its visual and affective elements enact a breach of the order of Western psychology as rooted in anti-Blackness. The sculpture becomes a site of assembly and relationality, animating possibilities for Black worldmaking. I conclude with a discussion on how Black aesthetics are generative sites of psychological insight and liberative potential.
