AI digital twins struggle to predict human behavior, creating 'funhouse mirror' distortions

While many fear artificial intelligence will replace humans, using AI to take over some human roles has benefits. Companies can use the technology to conduct surveys and polls, while behavioral scientists can run experiments on digital twins to gather faster insights without risking harm or distress to real participants.

'Safe query space' lets AI fix SQL errors without starting over

"Find the best-selling product from last year." When an AI system attempts to answer a question like this by querying a company database, even a single reference to a nonexistent item can cause the query to fail. Until now, correcting such an error often required regenerating the entire SQL query from scratch.

Clean steels help reveal unique mechanisms of hydrogen induced cracking

Steel pipelines used for oil and gas transportation remain the backbone of energy infrastructure. Hence, there is heavy focus on their integrity and resistance to degradation in corrosive conditions. Sour corrosion, a dangerous form of pipeline steel degradation when exposed to H2S, typically found in crude oil and natural gas, causes continuous hydrogen uptake into the steel, resulting in hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) and failure. It was of significant interest for us to identify the origin of HIC as it helps in designing new steels resistant to hydrogen attack.

Recycled aggregates can match structural concrete strength

A new study challenges one of the most deeply rooted assumptions in civil engineering: that using recycled materials in structural concrete inevitably means sacrificing strength. Researchers from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, in collaboration with the University of Surrey, have demonstrated that recycled aggregates can be incorporated into concrete without compromising performance—provided certain technical limits are respected. The findings are published in the journal Construction and Building Materials.

Two ultrathin films turn low-grade heat into cooling without an electric motor

Refrigerators, air-conditioning systems and data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity, and cooling demand is constantly rising. A research team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the University of Tsukuba in Japan is presenting a new approach demonstrated by a prototype in which heat assumes the role formerly played by an electric motor.
