  • “It Ain’t Just the Body That Suffering, Is the Mind Too”: Occupational Health Governance and Psychological Wellbeing Among Sugarcane Workers in Guyana

    Why selected:

Occupational health and safety (OHS) governance is not experienced in a culturally neutral way. The meanings workers bring to risk, authority, voice, and institutional protection are shaped by the cultural worlds in which they live and labour, yet this dimension of occupational health has received almost no qualitative attention in the Caribbean and Latin America. This study explored how sugarcane workers in Guyana experience OHS governance and what those experiences reveal about the relationship between culture, working conditions, and psychological wellbeing. Fourteen male workers were recruited through snowball sampling and interviewed by telephone using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Four master themes emerged: employer accountability experienced as absent; protective standards experienced as inadequate; worker voice experienced as structurally suppressed; and an occupational psychological health burden experienced as unrecognised. Findings indicate that inadequate protection was absorbed rather than contested, silence was communally sustained, and psychological distress was carried privately and without institutional recognition. The cultural world these workers inhabit shaped not only their exposure to governance failures but the very terms on which those failures were lived and made sense of. Culturally grounded approaches to OHS policy and occupational mental health are not supplementary considerations but preconditions of meaningful worker protection.

  • Working with circular data: A tutorial for cognitive and behavioral research.

    Why selected:

Introductory statistics courses and conventional methods in behavioral and cognitive science are typically restricted to Euclidean space without explicitly stating this, leaving many researchers unaware of how to handle data with circular or periodic properties (e.g., time of day or orientation on a screen). This tutorial provides an accessible yet rigorous introduction, designed to bridge the gap between statistical theory and practical application. After an overview of common applications, we discuss different ways of representing circular data mathematically and fundamental principles for working with them. We explain angular and vector representations and operations, including key considerations for implementing them in computer code. We then survey methods for visualizing circular data, including linear and polar plots and presentation of summary statistics. Next, we discuss circular measures of central tendency, dispersion, and shape: how they relate to their Euclidean counterparts, and why they differ. Finally, we turn to more advanced topics of the kind needed to construct models of circular data. We introduce the most common circular distribution families, including circular analogs of the Gaussian distribution and their properties, as well as flexible distribution families that can describe skewed and heavy-tailed data. The tutorial takes a method-oriented approach, not tied to specific software, but highlighting factors relevant to experimental design, data analysis, and statistical modeling. A consistent theme is the need to rigorously account for the inherent periodicity of circular data. We also provide a consistent notation for circular statistics and parameters, addressing the lack of established conventions in the field.

  • Gendered Negotiations of Unemployment. A Qualitative Interview Study With Turkish Fathers in Germany and Türkiye

    Why selected:

This qualitative study examines how unemployed Turkish fathers in Germany and Türkiye navigate their paternal identities amidst shifting gender roles and socioeconomic challenges. Based on 21 in-depth interviews, four distinct masculinity types were identified: disappointed, religious, playful, and stay-at-home fatherhood. These identity patterns transcend national borders and socioeconomic status, suggesting a transnational cultural continuity among Turkish fathers. While unemployment challenges the traditional breadwinner ideal, it also provides opportunities for alternative constructions of fatherhood through caregiving, community engagement, or religious devotion. Findings highlight how unemployment can lead to either heightened vulnerability or the development of adaptive new identities. Clear differences emerge between Germany and Türkiye in response to their different social welfare systems. While there is strong dissatisfaction with state support in Türkiye and fathers are often dependent on financial support from their families, the situation in Germany allows fathers to enjoy greater satisfaction with their lives and to develop alternative identities. Future research should incorporate the perspectives of spouses and children to better understand the broader family dynamics of unemployment.

  • Handling missing values when using neighborhood selection for network analysis.

    Why selected:

The handling of missing values in cross-sectional network analysis has been primarily studied in conjunction with regularization techniques. However, non-regularized alternatives, such as neighborhood selection via BIC based on node-wise multiple regression, have been shown to be viable alternatives for psychological networks. Moreover, its localized approach in model selection renders neighborhood selection particularly suitable for data sets containing missing values. In this study, we present two approaches based on multiple imputation, namely stacked and grouped MI, alongside direct and two-step EM procedures, to handle missing values. Furthermore, various approaches to calculating sample size, used for computing log-likelihood and BIC, are discussed and evaluated. A simulation study encompassing variations in network size, number of observations, and levels of missingness is conducted to investigate the performance of the missing data handling approaches and ways to determine sample size. Evaluation criteria include the recovery of the edge set, as well as bias in partial correlations and estimated node strength. The findings indicate that the two-step EM approach is the quickest method, offering adequate handling of missingness when the number of observations is very large. With a smaller ratio of the number of observations to the number of nodes and highmissingness, stacked MI emerges as the preferable option. Regarding sample size calculation, particularly in cases of high missingness, using the local number of observations per node yielded the least bias in estimated strength.

  • Body, Affect, and Meaning Making in the Diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: A Semiodynamic Microgenetic Analysis

    Why selected:

Qualitative health research has examined how people make meaning in the context of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) diagnoses, often focusing on how patients describe and reflect upon their current health situation. However, meaning is frequently treated as something enclosed within signs, with limited attention to how it emerges dynamically through lived, bodily processes. Addressing these two gaps, this article explores how affect and bodily experience guide the process of meaning - making in T1DM, a chronic and incurable illness. Grounded in a semiodynamic approach inspired by Peircean semiotics, we conducted a microgenetic analysis of in-depth interviews from a single-case study. Our analysis focused on four experiential moments: the transition to illness, the reception of the diagnosis, the pursuit of a cure, and the embodied experience of a hypoglycemic episode. Although the diagnosis initiated a shift in the patient’s experience, it was through the embodied and affect-laden episode of hypoglycemia that more enduring reorganizations in meaning took place, shaping decisions around self-care and engagement with treatment. These insights may support health professionals in attending more sensitively to the meanings that guide patients’ thinking, actions, and illness management. Additional cases are needed to support theory-building around the embodied dynamics of meaning-making in T1DM.

  • Assessing Prosocial Values in Initial Career Choice: The SVO Slider as a Behavioral Predictor of CSR Attribute Preferences

    Why selected:

Individual differences in prosocial values shape how job seekers weigh collective-oriented versus self-oriented job attributes, yet existing career assessment tools rely primarily on self-report measures susceptible to social desirability bias. This study applies Social Value Orientation (SVO), assessed via a behavioral resource-allocation instrument (i.e., the SVO slider measure), as a predictor of how applicants weigh corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions relative to salary and location in initial career choice. Using adaptive choice-based conjoint analysis ( N = 425 undergraduates), four CSR dimensions ( employee , environmental , social , and governance ) were examined alongside salary and location. Salary dominated job choice, followed by employee CSR. SVO positively predicted the importance of environmental and social CSR, dimensions primarily benefiting stakeholders outside the organization, while showing no significant association with employee CSR, consistent with the direct personal benefits it confers on employees. SVO negatively predicted salary importance. These findings provide evidence that the motivational structure underlying cooperation in social dilemma contexts also operates in initial career decisions and illustrate that conjoint analysis yields individual-level job attribute importance profiles with implications for career assessment research and employer recruitment.

  • projectCAT: A Shiny Application for Computerized Adaptive Testing with Sympson-Hetter Exposure Control, Content Balancing, and Item Selection Method Comparison

    Why selected:

projectCAT is an open-source R Shiny application providing a complete, code-free computerized adaptive testing (CAT) simulation environment. It integrates IRT calibration (1PL, 2PL, 3PL via marginal maximum likelihood), three adaptive item selection methods, namely, Maximum Fisher Information (MFI), Mean Expected Information (MEI), and Minimum Expected Posterior Variance (MEPV), three ability estimation methods (EAP, ML, and MAP), Sympson-Hetter (SH) exposure control, and content balancing with user-specified target proportions across multiple domains. Both SH and content balancing operate identically for single-examinee and full multi-examinee simulations. Applied to the built-in 300-item 2PL demo bank ( n = 500 , 20 items, MFI + EAP), RMSE = . 36 , correlation = . 94 , and item overexposure was reduced to 11.3% under SH ( r max = . 20 ) . Content proportions matched a 50/30/20 user-specified split exactly. projectCAT is freely available at https://hdmeasurement.shinyapps.io/projectCAT/ .

  • facomplex: R Package for Analysis of Complexity and Simplicity in Factor Analysis

    Why selected:

facomplex R package implements procedures for estimating complexity and simplicity derived from factor-analytic results of multidimensional scales. In this type of analysis, factor loadings are estimated to represent the relationship between the items and their latent factors or constructs, as well as with the other factors in the model where cross-factor loadings are estimated. An evaluation of these cross-factorial loadings helps determine whether the result is factorially simple or complex. There are indicators for assessing the complexity and simplicity of factorial results, and facomplex calculates all known indicators from various approaches focused on the direct estimation of factorial simplicity and complexity at the item, dimension, and total scale levels: the loading simplicity index, the factor simplicity index, Hofmann’s complexity coefficient (for items and factors), the Bentler Simplicity Index, and the proportion of explained variance derived from the squared sum of target versus non-target factor loadings.

  • The Liminal Microgenesis of the Cultural Cycle in the Sensemaking Process: A Dynamic Approach to the Study of Culture as Form (Morphogenesis) and Text (Textualization)

    Why selected:

The paper addresses the complex theme of culture understood as a dynamic, contextual, and relational semiotic process, which develops processuality through recursive cycles of crisis, reconfigurations, stabilizations, and further transitions. Culture is interpreted as a semiotic process of sensemaking that transcends the distinction between nature and culture, grounded in the complementary operations of both modus tollens (the pruning and reduction of potentialities) and modus ponens (the development and articulation of specific possibilities). The cultural process of sensemaking is viewed as a triadic activity in which the sign emerges from progressive interactions between the subject, alterity, and context, within a multidimensional topological field characterized by continuity and discontinuity. This theoretical perspective complementarily develops a morphogenetic approach and a textual approach , highlighting the importance of bordering, facing with limits and crises as processes that trigger cultural development. The perspective emphasizes the importance of observing emergent relations and dynamics, rather than merely contents, to understand the processes of signification in their constant becoming.
