A Panorama of Psychology as a Discipline

This page is a Chinese-language map of psychology. The outline below summarises it in English.

How to read this map

Three distinctions come first: mind versus behaviour, basic versus applied research, and science versus common sense.

Basic disciplines

Biological, cognitive, developmental, social and personality psychology, plus psychometrics and statistics as the shared infrastructure.

Applied and professional disciplines

Clinical and counselling, educational, industrial-organisational, health, forensic, engineering and human factors, environmental, consumer, sport, school and community, and cross-cultural psychology.

History and schools of thought

From Wundt's laboratory in 1879 through structuralism, functionalism, behaviourism, Gestalt, psychoanalysis, humanistic psychology and the cognitive revolution, to evolutionary, positive, cultural and computational strands.

Research methods

Experiments, correlational designs, observation and case studies, surveys, longitudinal and cross-sectional designs, physiological and neuroimaging measures, meta-analysis and qualitative research, plus statistics and open science.

Appendices

Quick-reference table of branches, a basic-versus-applied comparison, and psychology in China including the Chinese Psychological Society (founded 1921).
