  • The Role of the Fear of Positive Evaluation in the Relationship Between Social Anxiety and the Pride Experience and Expression

    以中介模型补上社交焦虑与自豪感表达之间的研究空白,样本量较大。

    Why selected: 平均 46 分,低于来源门槛 60

There is a significant gap in research concerning the relationship between social anxiety and the expression of pride. This study examines the mediating role of fear of positive evaluation in the relationship between social anxiety and both the tendency to express pride and the momentary experience of authentic and hubristic pride. A sample of 703 first-year undergraduate students from Croatia completed a survey assessing social anxiety, fear of positive evaluation, experience of authentic and hubristic pride and expression of pride. Fear of positive evaluation mediated the link between social anxiety and the tendency to express pride. Additionally, it also mediated the relationship between social anxiety and both authentic and hubristic pride. The results are consistent with evolutionary theories that explain the importance of social hierarchy in shaping the emotional experiences of socially anxious individuals. Findings highlight the significant role of fear of positive evaluation in determining how socially anxious individuals experience and express pride, emphasizing the need for further research on its effects in domains of social status and psychological well-being.

  • Shared Friend Criteria Modulate Aesthetic Judgment of Faces and Paintings but Not Moral Beauty

    三个实验区分审美领域,显示同伴标准的影响并非普遍适用。

    Why selected: 平均 46 分,低于来源门槛 60

Aesthetic preferences are shaped by social context, yet the influence of close peers’ standards across different aesthetic domains remains unclear. This study investigated whether friends’ aesthetic criteria modulate individuals’ judgments of faces, paintings, and moral beauty using a modified social conformity paradigm across three experiments. Results showed that individuals’ aesthetic judgments of faces and paintings were significantly influenced by their friends’ ratings, shifting systematically toward peer evaluations. In contrast, judgments of moral beauty were largely unaffected by peer influence. These findings suggest that social cognitive factors shape aesthetic judgment in a domain-specific manner: stimuli with relatively objective perceptual features (e.g., facial averageness and painting composition) are more susceptible to social influence, whereas moral beauty—grounded in internalized values—remains more resistant.

  • Self-Estimated Attractiveness: Demographic and Personality Correlates

    将自我吸引力评价与地位信号及人格特质联系起来,拓展进化视角。

    Why selected: 平均 29 分,低于来源门槛 60

This paper examines psychological correlates of self-assessed physical attractiveness (SAPA) across two studies. It tests ideas from evolutionary theory, namely that SAPA is related to a number of demographic, ideological, and personality variables that are status-signaling mechanisms related to success in the workplace. Participants rated their attractiveness on a 0–100 scale and completed measures of demographics, ideology, optimism, and six workplace personality traits (High Potential Trait Indicator). Study 1 ( N = 799) included a Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance-based behavioral style assessment (DISC), whereas Study 2 ( N = 292) incorporated a measure of cognitive ability (General Intelligence Assessment). Across both samples, higher self-rated attractiveness was associated with being male, holding a university degree, greater optimism, and trait emotional adjustment. Additionally, self-assessed attractiveness was associated with being more religious, liberal political orientation, tolerance for ambiguity, and competitiveness in Study 1 but not in Study 2. Cognitive ability showed a small negative association with SAPA, while behavioral style contributed negligible incremental explanatory value. The relevance of SAPA is discussed in terms of evolutionary advantages alongside limitations and future recommendations.

  • Autistic-Like Traits in Members of the General Population and Mate Retention Tactics: The Mediation of Attachment Styles and Reproductive Strategies

    从进化与依恋角度解释自闭症样特质与伴侣保留策略的关联。

    Why selected: 平均 36 分,低于来源门槛 60

Autistic-like traits (ALTs) have been widely examined, including in romantic relationships, yet few studies have approached them from an evolutionary perspective. Mate retention tactics are associated with different types of life history strategies. Because we hypothesize that individuals with ALTs prefer a fast life history strategy, we also assume that they use specific types of mate retention tactics. This study investigated the associations between ALTs and mate retention tactics, considering reproductive strategies and attachment styles as mediators. Structural equation modeling on a sample of 796 individuals (52% female) showed that individuals with ALTs are less likely to engage in cost-inflicting tactics. No significant link between ALTs and benefit-provisioning mate retention tactics was found in this study. ALTs were more strongly linked to attachment styles—both fearful and avoidant—than to reproductive strategies. Contrary to expectations, ALTs did not negatively predict a slow reproductive strategy (parental effort) or positively predict a fast strategy (mating effort), though additional regression analyses suggested a potential link with mating effort. Participants’ sex did not moderate these relationships, while age was associated with decreased attachment anxiety, mating effort, and mate retention behaviors, alongside increased parental effort. A key limitation is the weak predictive power of ALTs for reproductive strategies, highlighting the need for alternative measurement approaches in future research.

  • The Experience of Birth Trauma: ‘The Machine Just Kept Trundling Me Along’

    以现象学访谈呈现心理性分娩创伤的主观体验,补充临床倾听视角。

    Why selected: 平均 48 分,低于来源门槛 60

This study aimed to explore the lived experience of psychological birth trauma using an intersectional feminist trauma lens and interpretive phenomenological analysis. Eleven participants from the Outaouais region in Canada, who self-identified as having experienced a psychologically traumatic birth and have healed from it, participated in in-depth interviews and an optional focus group. The study identified four key themes related to the experience of birth trauma: (a) unexpected and unprepared for traumatic birth, (b) trauma-inducing care and interactions with healthcare, (c) silence: alone in shame and guilt and (d) navigating postpartum mental health while wearing a snowsuit. The intersection of participants’ identities, such as race, gender, sexual orientation and ability, contributed to their experiences of birth trauma. The findings highlight the importance of applying an intersectional lens to understand the role of systemic oppression in birth trauma experiences and the need for healthcare providers to provide trauma-informed, compassionate care that acknowledge the diversity of birthing individuals’ identities and experiences.

  • Using Participatory Visual Methods in Feminist Research on Gender-Based Violence: Unanticipated Challenges and Ethical Concerns

    如实报告参与式视觉方法在性别暴力研究中的伦理困境,具方法学参考价值。

    Why selected: 平均 55 分,低于来源门槛 60

In this article, we reflect on the processes of engaging with participatory visual methods in the context of two feminist research projects on gender-based violence (GBV): a digital storytelling project with migrant survivors in Norway and a photovoice project on sexual violence prevention with emerging adults in Türkiye. Despite the previously highlighted benefits of participatory visual methods as accessible, inclusive, empowering, and transformative approaches with the potential to bridge the gap between research and intervention, our engagement with these methods revealed significant challenges, risks, and barriers to this potential. Our journeys with these methods led us to reflexively think through the ethical issues associated with voice, visibility, representation, aesthetics, and their emotional impacts. The struggles we encountered raised doubts about the applicability of participatory visual methods to feminist GBV research and led us to argue for a more situated understanding of how, when, and with whom these methodologies work effectively and fulfill their promise. While we believe that participatory visual methods offer powerful strategies for mobilizing change and exposing the lived aspects of gender-based oppression and inequalities, we advocate for a contextualized understanding of their risks and limitations in feminist research, and for making adjustments accordingly.

  • Receptive music therapy for hospitalized adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A mixed-methods pilot study

    混合方法试点评估现场音乐对住院厌食症青少年焦虑的干预效果。

    Why selected: 平均 38 分,低于来源门槛 65

Treating anorexia nervosa (AN) remains challenging, especially in the acute phase requiring hospitalization. This pilot study assessed the effectiveness of live music intervention (LMI) in reducing anxiety and body dysmorphia during stressful weighing sessions in hospitalized adolescent girls with AN ( n = 8). The study was a naturalistic pilot study non-randomized with sequential crossover, as it was conducted within the framework of standard care. Using the innovative group receptive live music listening intervention technique, DéPi-AM (an instrumental psychomusical relaxation intervention), 8 participants underwent a 16-week period: 8 LMI sessions (experimental condition) compared with standard treatment (8 control sessions). Quantitative and qualitative data were collected at various moments between 2020 and 2021. Results showed that LMI significantly reduced perceived anxiety, systolic blood pressure, and heart rate compared with control conditions. Weighing periods significantly increased psychophysiological indexes (e.g. systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate) compared with emotionally neutral days. Also, in all conditions, we find no significant results regarding the increase or reduction of dysmorphophobia. Preliminary qualitative data indicated more negative emotions in the absence of LMI and increased positive thoughts and relaxation during LMI sessions. While the findings suggest music therapy’s potential as a complementary therapy for anxiety reduction in hospitalized patients, such as the DéPi-AM (receptive music therapy protocol that is the subject of this study), methodological limitations highlight the need for future studies combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to refine its application and impact.

  • Music therapy findings from a pilot randomised controlled trial of school-based arts therapies in the United Kingdom

    学校音乐治疗随机对照试验报告设计要素,为同类研究提供实施经验。

    Why selected: 平均 46 分,低于来源门槛 65

One in five children and young people in the United Kingdom have a probable mental health condition and feel unhappy with their lives, presenting the lowest life satisfaction across Europe. Children and young people’s needs are now believed to have drastically exceeded the capabilities of the national healthcare system, and there is a call to radically rethink the scope of support and early interventions. In this pilot randomised controlled study, we aimed to investigate the delivery of a school-based music therapy intervention and to test whether all elements of the study design (e.g. recruitment, randomisation, follow-up) can work together in a larger study. The process and outcomes were evaluated by children and teachers through standardised questionnaires of quality of life, well-being and life functioning (Child Outcome Rating Scale), emotional and behavioural difficulties (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire with impact supplement), and biomarkers (FitBits) assessing children’s sleep. Adherence to the therapeutic protocol was rated by the researcher and the music therapist. Overall, improvements were observed in all outcome measures. However, in questionnaires of quality of life and Child Outcome Rating Scale, these improvements did not reach statistical significance when baseline differences were considered. Significant improvements were observed in the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire with impact supplement and in children’s sleep, with children attending music therapy sleeping ~35 min longer than those who did not. All sessions were given an average rating of 9/10, indicating that children’s session quality ratings were high and consistent across sessions. Sample size calculations for future large-scale studies were performed, and recommendations were provided regarding how to improve the effectiveness of music therapy from children’s perspectives.

  • Enhancing the Calm Place technique in special education through Music and Imagery: A pilot study

    小样本试点探索音乐意象融入课堂稳定策略,为特殊教育提供可行路径。

    Why selected: 平均 33 分,低于来源门槛 65

The Calm Place technique is an imagery-based stabilisation strategy used to support emotional regulation in children experiencing distress in school settings. This study examined whether integrating a Music Imagery-based intervention into the Calm Place technique enhances sensory engagement, imaginative detail, and emotional connection in children attending special education programmes. Eight elementary school students participated in three individual sessions. Session 1 involved the Calm Place technique without music, followed by a drawing and a verbal description of the imagined environment. In Session 2, AI-generated images based on each child’s initial description were presented alongside a selected music track within a Music and Imagery framework. In Session 3, a music listening intervention was applied; preparatory instructions were provided before music listening to facilitate internal exploration of the Calm Place, followed by narrative recounting and a second drawing. Drawings and narratives were analysed thematically across sessions. Results suggested that Music and Imagery was associated with richer sensory, emotional, and relational dimensions in children’s safe place representations. Drawings in Sessions 2 and 3 demonstrated greater complexity and personal symbolism, while narratives reflected enhanced vividness, emotional safety, and relaxation. These findings indicate that Music and Imagery may enhance Calm Place interventions within special education contexts.

  • The Role of Perceived Health in Preferences for Average Face Shapes

    把健康感知引入面孔偏好解释,提示审美判断可能带有适应功能。

    Why selected: 平均 39 分,低于来源门槛 60

Many studies have reported that faces with less distinctive (i.e., more average or prototypical) shapes are perceived to be more attractive. This preference for faces with less distinctive shapes is often explained in terms of a psychological adaptation in which putative health cues are considered attractive. While evidence that individuals with less distinctive face shapes are actually healthier than those with distinctive face shapes is mixed, there is good evidence that faces with less distinctive shapes are perceived to be healthier. To date, only one study has tested whether preferences for average faces are mediated by health perceptions, finding that health perceptions partially mediated the negative relationship between facial attractiveness and distinctiveness. However, facial distinctiveness was assessed using distinctiveness ratings, which are only modestly correlated with objective measures of shape distinctiveness. Consequently, we tested whether health perceptions mediated the negative relationship between facial attractiveness and shape distinctiveness using a sample of 50 male and 50 female face images for which it has previously been reported that both health and attractiveness ratings were negatively correlated with an objective measure of shape distinctiveness. Mediation analysis showed that ∼63% (95% CI [40%, 80%], p < .001) of the negative relationship between facial attractiveness and shape distinctiveness could be attributed to the effects of health perceptions. This finding contributes to growing evidence that preferences for face shapes with low distinctiveness occur, at least in part, because less distinctive faces appear to be healthier.
