“Yes, and…”: Author Response to the Commentaries on “Identity Play: A Speculative Vision for Conceptualizing Identity in the 21st Century”

This is the Author Response to the set of commentaries on the Special Section target article, “Identity play: A speculative vision for conceptualizing identity in the 21st Century.” In this response, the author highlights one important contribution from each of the commentaries and then responds to five questions that emerged from the set of commentaries. The five questions are: What does it mean to publish explicitly speculative work in a scientific journal? What does it mean to attempt to integrate psychological science with the humanities and arts? Is identity play meant to be normative or prescriptive? Is identity play unique to this historical moment? How does identity play navigate the competing agency of the individual, close others, and society? The author response concludes with a hope for continued collaborative play with these ideas.
